Questions chapter 1 International English
1.Since England was crippled after WWII it was The United States role to take the lead in the matter of the English language. Since the founding of NATO in 1947, english has flourished as the language of diplomacy, trade between countries and such. But were most people was influenced became through the television and movies in English. Since the United States was leading in the movie industry, many people watched american movies even though they didn’t know english or learned it in education. Later came the internett, wich would become very important for English as a means of communication and information exchange.2. ESL are people who speak English as a second language, EFL is people who usually have direct contact with English, ESP are the people who talk and write English as a nativ language.
3. Rather then enriching cultures it think English influences peoples culutres, slowly changing them the last 60 years. But now faster and faster through the media and a dependency for international relations. Since language is closely connected to culture, there is a chance that if a native language is change to much the culture changes as well. So yes, it could drain it of it's uniqueness, but in return give something also. It would not mean the end of the world if languages started disappearing , say a hundred years from now, as thousands have before.
4. Inner circle speakers consists of people that speak and learn english natively . Counries that been in a british colony or are in the commonwealth of Britan (Australia, Canada, New Zeland, etc...).
The outer sircle are often countries that have been colonies, but did not learn it through the mother tongue. English was used in the country in quite large degree and when the country became independant still chose to teach it and use it for trade and such, becoming even the secound most spoken language in the country (India, Singapore, South Africa, etc..)
Expanding sircle consists of countries that did not have much contact with English, but choose to start learning it in schools because of international connectivity or diplomacy (Russia, China, Japan, etc...)
5. Since there are more non-native speakers then native, there must be some sort of standard Englsih, that’s because Englsih must be teached and learned in the same way to avoid confusion. The two renowned standards today is British and American english.
6. Professor David Crystal belives that in the future we will have three forms of English in the world. One, people speak it localy as their dialect, two, a form that is for national variety, used for education and business. Three, a standard version used for communicating with foreignes. This includes the mother tounge variety that non-natives speak.
7. The six subjects English is used for internationaly is, international eductation, international business and trade, art and entertainment, science and technology, digital comuntication and medicine.
