How to detect bias in news mediaWriter’s note: Since the article this is based on is clearly meant for american media, I used it as my perspective for the writing.

There is many ways to detect bias in the news media, here are the following that have been pickt out:

Favortism:

Is the news outlet connected to a political party/ have religious views contradicting subject in the news article being written? Being connected to such partys will mean that the outlet is likley to display a bias connected the subject, this is seen in american news outlets. Outlets like Fox News have been shown bias towards the republican party and also towards christan debatable views and conservatism, also if the news outlet are having stocks in the company they are writing an article about they can also show favrotism.

Sources:

The media often rely on sources for inforamtion on a case, that is why it is important to have a variety of sources to get a diverce perspective on a case. A study by http://www.journalism.org/ showed that news outlets on the republican side of the political sepectrum used more of the same sources, compared to the left side of outlets used more of a variety of sources. Having many ways to get information on a case and then siphoning the most logical and truthful conclusion and it will most likely be unbias. It is often shown that public sources were under represented, this is most likley because of the point above, if news oulets used other than there own experts there conclusions would disagree with self interests.

Diversity:

In some news outlets there is an apparent lack of diversity in race, gender, or people that have a different sexual preference than whats “normal “ , because of political and religiouse connection to the news oulets. This show there are news that is directed to a certain populus, that are none of the above. Which brings it is connected to the next point.

Point of view:

Different outlets are ment for different people, but when some only focuses on negatives that only makes a difference for the rich and ignore the people that it effets the most, it creates unfaire and ignorant news media.The media is mostly meant for masses and not for the few.

Double standards:

Double standards is something that plages the american media, they have gotten criticism for showing great sadness when something happens to a white american but none for black’s (for exampel a random shooting). Also on the opposite spectrum they have reacted less when a white american commites a crime, but when a afro-american commites it is a disgrace and is called a variety of stereotypical names in the paper. This is a trend that is changing because of public outlash.
